パリに笑壷を運ぶ/現代日本映像作品展

パリ日本文化会館は、2012年で設立15周年を迎えます。これまでの大きなご支援に感謝し、15周年を笑顔で祝うため、パリ日本文化会館では2012年のいくつかの主要な事業を「笑い」というテーマで展開します。春には、現代日本の「ユーモア」「パロディ」をテーマに、主に若い世代の作家たちの作品を中心とした映像作品展を開催します。また秋の展覧会では、古代から19世紀にかけての日本の伝統美術にみる、さまざまな「笑い」の形を紹介します。
めでたいこと、喜ばしいことだけでなく、ばかげたことや道理に合わないこと、ブラックユーモアや社会批判に至るまで、さまざまな「笑い」の形があります。日本人にとって「笑い」とは何か？ 東京と大阪のあいだでも笑いの文化は違うのか？ 本展で紹介する９人の現代アーティストの作品の中に、そのヒントが隠されています。来場の皆様に、大いに笑っていただけることを願っています。

映画監督でもある石橋義正の短編ドラマ「OH! Mikey」は、転勤でアメリカから日本にやってきたフーコン家の息子マイキーを中心に繰り広げられる登場人物がすべてマネキン人形のドラマです。静止したままの人形がときには笑顔のまま毒を含んだ不条理なやりとりを展開させてゆく“ブラックコメディ”です。
倉重迅はビデオ作品「Tank and Potted Flower」において、塩化ビニール管で実物大の戦車を組み立てていくプロセスを撮影、早送りで上映します。威力のない骨組みだけの戦車をどこにでもいるような少女たちが組み立てていきます。
森村泰昌は名画のなかに自身を登場させる作品や銀幕のスター女優に扮する作品などさまざまなシリーズで高い評価を得ています。「独裁者を笑え/スキゾフレニック」では、チャップリンの名作映画「独裁者」の主人公を演じて私たちを笑いに誘います。21世紀の独裁者の悲哀を笑うこの作品は、多様な笑いを重層的に含んでいます。
トースティーは、ミュージックビデオふうのポップかつアイロニーに満ちた作品を制作し続けています。日本人である作家本人が「両手がフランスパン（バゲット）の女」となった「バゲット・バルドー」は、女優ブリジッド・バルドーへのパロディ、かつオマージュでもあるシリーズ作品です。
ベルリンを拠点に活躍する田口行弘の作品は、日用品や家具、スタジオの床板までが動く古典的なコマ撮りアニメーション映像でありながら、「場」が躍りだすようなダイナミックさを含み、観る者を楽しませてくれます。
泉太郎は、フレームの内側と外側を使う、あるいは「虚」と「実」の像を用いるなど、映像の特性を用いて作品を「遊び」にしてしまいます。脱力してしまいそうな映像作品は、子どもの遊びの延長のようにも見えますが、それを真剣にやってのける真面目さもあります。
榎本耕一の作品は、コンドルのJoeyとパンダのMarqueeのどたばたコメディ。シナリオや場面の展開はなかなか簡単には読めず、人形を用いた実写、ゲーム、手描きアニメーションなど、私たちの日常に溢れている表現メディアを巧みに取り入れて映像を構成しています。音声もドイツ語、中国語など複数言語が取り入れつつ、発声しているのはＥラーニングサイトであり、いかのも現代的なつくりとなっています。
田中偉一郎の作品「ラジオ体操アドリブ」では、日本では老若男女誰もが振り付けを知る「体操」を、群衆のなかで一人が勝手にアドリブの動きをつけています。一糸乱れぬ群衆の動きの中に異物が放り込まれることで起こる周囲の戸惑いは想像するだけでもおかしく、またそれを観てみぬ素振りで体操を続ける群衆にも又おかしみを感じます。いつもの目線をずらすことで、違った世界が見えてくるかもしれない、そんなことを真面目に考える作家です。
鈴木淳の『だけなんなん／so what?』シリーズは、身の回りの風景や出来事を撮影したシリーズですが、繰り返し行なわれる行為はその部分だけ切り取られるだけで、意味もなくおかしかったりします。長回しの定点撮影中に予想外のことが起きるなど、時には偶然性も彼の作品のなかでは大切な要素となっています。

Japanese contemporary video creations
Wednesday March 28th to Saturday June 23rd
Chuckles of joy and laughter provoked by absurd or bizarre situations, black comedy, criticising society…Laughter comes in many forms and expresses all sorts of emotions. So what makes the Japanese laugh? Is humour the same in Tokyo and Osaka? Get your answer from nine modern video creators who will, we hope, make you smile and laugh out loud!
In the OH! Mikey series of short films, the director Yoshimasa Ishibashi uses models to act out an American family that’s moved to Japan. A black comedy whose silliness is heightened by the models’ fixed expressions.
Another example of unique black comedy, Jin Kurashige shows how young girls build simple plastic tubes…a vehicle for the great outdoors.
Parody is an obsession that two diametrically opposed artists share. World famous photographer, Yasumasa Morimura excels in recreating himself as a film star and painter. This time he’s asking us to make fun of tyrants in a video where he plays a disturbing Japanese clone of Chaplin’s The Great Dictator.
Baguette Bardot pays homage to Brigitte Bardot in a resolutely French parody by Japanese artist toastie. She has two baguettes for arms, a blonde wig and stars in New Wave and Japanese pop videos.
Some artists are still big kids with fond memories of bygone toys…Yukihiro Taguchi’s spellbinding videos are filmed image by image and show tables, chairs and even the workshop’s wooden floor performing choreographed moves or looking pretty in the streets of Berlin. Tarô Izumi films playful bric-a-brac playground games for adults who have serious fun playing the idiot. Kôichi Enomoto uses toys, animation and image synthesis to tell the magical tales of a multi-lingual panda and eagle.
The most mundane activity can make us laugh as Iichirô Tanaka’s videos prove. This artist has also filmed a traditional gymnastics session in a park. When a participant starts improvising ridiculous moves, the people around him pretend not to have noticed.
“So what?” Is the ironic title of Atsushi Suzuki’s series and encapsulates the perplexity that you sometimes feel when watching harmless scenes filmed in his area. He loops very short and insignificant excerpts on repeat which gives the impression of the absurd and comic.
The exhibition advisor and creator, Hisako Hara, has also included two arty and underground film schedules chosen by Takashi Sawa as part of this made in Japan comedy caper. The works of Ryô Hirano, Daisuke Nose, Makiko Yamamoto, Shin’ichi Tamano, Tomoharu Suzuki, Takuya Dairiki and Takashi Miura will be shown at the exhibition and the small room (ground floor) on April 7th (attended by Takashi Sawa) and May 19th at 3pm and 5pm.
